Medical Malpractice Costs to the Medical and Patient Community
Many people fail to realize that their actions affect a large number of people even if it is against a single individual. Medical malpractice law suits and insurance are a major example of what the real costs of such an action entail. Most people who feel as though they were wronged by a doctor do not forgive a failed surgery even if they understood that the surgery may fail and the hopeful results were never guaranteed. The patient and the patient's family may file suit for what they feel is impersonal or inadequate care, even though the individuals have no medical experience. These law suits have far reaching consequence well beyond the single nurse or doctor that they are leveled against. The medical community is a close knit community. These people are bound together through years of education and trials. These people hold the same moral stance of wanting to help others. For a doctor to pursue this professional for the money alone is an assumption that shows a person knows nothing of the medical field. Doctors are always on call and rarely get days off, let alone vacations. If a doctor simply wanted money, there are other professions that pay very well but do not require being responsible for a person's life. Professions such as lawyers, accountants and personal trainers ensure a lot of money without the stresses. Going into any of these fields can be lucrative, and while stressful, not life and death situational. Doctors become doctors so that they may help people. It is unfortunate that the medical malpractice costs are keeping many good doctors or future doctors out of the practice. Medical malpractice suits occur when an individual does not feel that he or one of his loved ones received the best possible care or were intentionally injured. There are some suits that should be followed through on, such as when a doctor amputates a good limb but leaves the injured limb in place. Most medical malpractice suits are impractical and frivolous though. Some suits are against doctors who expressed that the surgery or procedure is not a guarantee towards success but rather a possibility. These patients often feel cheated and feel a loss because they believe that medicine is a science rather than a study and they had viewed the procedure as a fix rather than an attempt at fixing. Lawyers take advantage of these misgivings towards the medical community and enable people to sue even though there is no real basis. The belief that the medical malpractice costs will be absorbed by the insurance company is a well founded and well practiced belief. |
